Your Role and Responsibilities
IBM Research in the UK is seeking high-calibre candidates with skills in AI, scalable architecture design, and data science to join the IBM Research UK Climate and Sustainability (C&S) team. As a member of the C&S team, you will research, develop, operationalise, and scale novel techniques, and work with complex materials and large climate datasets for discovery and making them consumable in science and business.

Introduction
IBM Research is building the next generation of AI and cloud-enabled systems to accelerate scientific discovery across multiple disciplines: from Climate and Sustainability to Therapeutics and Biomarkers. To achieve this, we’re working on projects utilising the latest computational, computer science, and artificial intelligence techniques developed by research scientists.
Required Technical and Professional Expertise
We are looking for research scientists with at least a graduate qualification in Computer Science (especially Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Data Science), Engineering, Computational Sciences, or related topics. The following are essential skills for you to succeed in the role.
- Expertise in natural language processing using LLM, Deep QA, or AI and modelling for geosciences.
- Strong programming skills using at least one common AI framework.
- Strong academic record, ideally with publications in top peer-reviewed scientific journals and/or conferences.
- Ability to listen to others, establish requirements and formulate problems derived from real-world use cases.
- Carry out independent research and demonstrate research outcomes via advanced prototypes.
- Strong communication skills and excellent command of the English language, both verbally and in academic writing.
Preferred Technical and Professional Experience
As a preference, you will also be able to show the following:
- A PhD in Computer Science (especially Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Data Science), Engineering, Computational Sciences, or related topics.
- Experience in machine learning methodologies and their application in a scientific domain (e.g., materials science) or climate-informed decision-making.
- Experience working in cross-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary environments.
