Internship Opportunity: Alexandria – Deep Generative Modelling for Enterprise Knowledge Extraction

at Microsoft
Published January 3, 2023
Location Cambridge, United Kingdom
Category Machine Learning
Job Type Internship

Description

The vision of Project Alexandria is to automatically extract enterprise knowledge into a single, consistent knowledge base (KB). The KB is constructed as part of a probabilistic program that models the relationship between organisational knowledge and data in the enterprise. After inference in the program, the KB then powers human-centric experiences that enable people to work effectively with knowledge, helping them find projects, people and information across their company. Our team video explains more. The Alexandria team includes experts in Machine Learning, HCI and software engineering, who work together to being ML-powered human-centric experiences to users through products like Viva Topics. Central to the team’s  mission is the advancement and incorporation of new machine learning technologies that empower richer experiences for users.

This internship role will study generative probabilistic models for nested data structures. You will join our ambitious research team for summer 2023 in Cambridge (UK).

We seek interns with expertise in deep probabilistic modelling. An ideal candidate would be willing to be part of a multidisciplinary team consisting of researchers, applied scientists, and engineers. Expected outcomes include advancements in machine learning approaches for generative modelling, with the possibility of publication in a relevant academic outlet and real-world product impact.

Responsibilities

Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, Microsoft Research interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, students are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community.

As a member of the Alexandria team, you will play an important role in realizing our ambitions for the future of AI-assisted knowledge work. Working closely together with other team members, and supported by a group of skilled engineers, you will take part in conceiving, implementing, and testing new ideas that can revolutionize how institutional knowledge is accessed within the enterprise.

During the 12-week Internship you will:

  • Advance state-of-the-art in enterprise knowledge modelling
  • Work with internal and external collaborators
  • Report and present research findings within Microsoft Research.
  • Report findings in research publications

Qualifications

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program in Probabilistic Machine Learning or related technical field.
  • Ability to write reproducible and reusable research code, as evidenced by e.g. your github profile.
  • Experience with research tools including git, python and cloud infrastructure, as well as a python-based deep learning stack such as JAX/PyTorch/TensorFlow.
  • Strong scientific writing ability, as evidenced by your published papers at top ML conferences, or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of and interest in deep generative models, including diffusion models.
  • Experience and interest in deep probabilistic machine learning and knowledge modelling.
  • The ability to work in a diverse and multidisciplinary team.

Exceptional candidates who may not satisfy all of the above desired skills and experiences will be considered.
