Job description:2 PhD positions within ERC Consolidator Grant Modelling Assisted Solid State Materials Development and Additive Manufacturing (MA.D.AM)

Reference code: 2023/WM 1
Commencement date: 1st April 2023
Work location: Geesthacht near Hamburg
Application deadline: 15.03.2023

The Solid State Materials Processing department of the Institute of Materials Mechanics, at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon is looking for two PhD students (m/f/d), initially limited to 3 years, within the ERC Consolidator Grant ?Modelling Assisted Solid State Materials Development and Additive Manufacturing? (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101001567). On the first PhD position, responsibilities are towards experimental investigations with focus on Additive Manufacturing (AM) via Solid State Layer Deposition. The tasks on the second PhD position are modelling-oriented with strong focus on machine learning approaches, applied to an innovative process chain along Solid State Materials Development and Additive Manufacturing.

Equal opportunity is an important part of our personnel policy. We would therefore strongly encourage qualified women to apply for the positions.

Your tasks
#execution and responsible handling of the research project funded by the European Union, i.e. the ERC Consolidator Grant Modelling Assisted Solid State Materials Development and Additive Manufacturing (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101001567).
#fundamental understanding of relationships between process variables and resulting microstructure
#working in an interdisciplinary team
#publication of the results in scientific journals and at conferences

PhD position 1:
#experimental production and analyses of AM parts via Solid State Layer Deposition process
#process/microstructural characterization, including ex situ/ in-situ characterization
#implementation of the work of WP4 ?Solid State Additive Manufacturing via Solid State Layer Deposition? within the ERC project (https://www.hereon.de/institutes/materials_mechanics/solid_state_materials_processing/madam/index.php.en)

PhD position 2:
#application of methods of machine learning for decrypting composition-process-microstructure-property relationships
#development of surrogate models for the developed process chain within the ERC project
#implementation of the work of WP6 ?Machine Learning for decrypting Composition-Process-Microstructure-Property? within the ERC project (https://www.hereon.de/institutes/materials_mechanics/solid_state_materials_processing/madam/index.php.en)
